ed note: Dave Dubbs recently resigned at Ephrata. We thought it would be interesting to get some words from him. Dave is a long time coach at different places and levels, but known for guiding the Mounts off and on for the past 2 decades. Enjoy.
LLHoops: Over your career, how have you seen the HS game change?
Numerous rule changes regarding the foul line and surrounding area. The Three
point line. Although I am not an advocate for the 3 point line at the Jr. High
Level.
The shorter seasons does not appear to help the game but I'm sure helps the PIAA
finances.
LLHoops: Do you have some games that stand out in your mind?
Three years ago beating York High and Reading High back to back.
When the Big House Chad Burkhart played a game down in Solanco's barn, some of
the fans were throwing Twinkies on the court and Chad picked them up and was
eating them as he went to the foul line. That one was hard to forget.
LLHoops: We know you have coached lots of good players. Are there any that stand
out as players or hard workers you would like to recognize?
I would be afraid to mention some for fear I would miss a fantastic young man
but special brings to mind Kurt Axe who later played at Randolph Macon. Pound
for Pound, inch for inch, he was such a competitor that he made everyone around
him better. The one untold benefit of coaching is that we usually work with some
fantastic young people.
LLHoops: Who was the major influence in your coaching career?
My mother who is never wrong and has an answer for every situation and my High
School Football Coach. Don Hafer
I have super wife who is very supportive and quiet frankly is a little nervous
about having me at home.
LLHoops: What advice would you give to young coaches wanting to be head coaches?
Find something else to do unless you carry the 10 commandments and sit on the
right hand of God. You will be criticized and scrutinized every night. Some
nights you are real smart and then a year later real dumb.
LLHoops: What will you miss the most about coaching next season?
Working with the young people that walk into your gym. The players are the
constant, They make it all worth while. Trying to get players to the next level.
LLHoops: Any other thoughts you might have for our readers at Llhoops.com
I will miss the poor mouthing and camaraderie of my fellow coaches in the LL.
I will not miss the countless hours we have spent meeting to make changes in our
league, when NO one pays attention to our suggestions. I will not miss the
computer glitches in the officials schedule. I have still have tickets to our
banquet for Lenny Neff the year he did 7 of our games. I knew every fishing story
he ever mentioned.
