BERKS BEAT

Bulldogs Berks champs

Ryan Ebner had  a career-high 22 points and 10 rebounds and Josh Smith scored 20 points as Wilson brought home its first Berks Conference championship in 13 years with a 68-54 victory over Reading High at the Sovereign Center.

The Bulldogs advanced with victories over Holy Name and Tulpehocken, while Reading High downed defending champ Central Catholic and Oley Valley to reach the final.

David Lawson and Jermaine Jackson scored 16 apiece for the Red Knights.

Wilson's hopes to reach the District 3-AAAA final were dashed in a 58-49 quarterfinal loss to Penn Manor, but the Bulldogs rallied for impressive wins over McCaskey and Chambersburg to gain the fifth seed into states.

Reading, meanwhile, fell in the quarters to Carlisle and was eliminated by Chambersburg in a state qualifier.

District 3 Title in the Cards

Central Catholic won its second straight district title, defeating Scotland 49-43 in the 3-A final Friday at Hershey's Giant Center.

Central (25-4), which won the 3-AA crown last year, got a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds from center Colin Naugle; 14 boards and 12 points from Nick Rossignoli; and 11 points from Matt Ashcroft.

Heartbreak for Trojans

Tulpehocken saw its hopes for a District 3-AA title end in heartbreak as York Catholic rallied from a double-digit deficit late in the third quarter for a 39-32 victory in the final at the Giant Center.

Jacob Iati had 21 of his 23 points in the second half for the Fighting Irish. Andrew Pawlyk led Tulpy with 12 points.
