UPDATED 1/29/08

As the calendar nears February, it is time to start looking toward the District 2 Championship playoffs.  Below is the schedule of playoff dates released by the committee.  As always, the Northeast Beat hopes that Punxy Phil does not see his shadow this Saturday, because winter weather can really play havoc with getting this 10-day open tournament completed.

2/13 (BOYS Play-in Games, AA)

2/14 (GIRLS Play-in Games, AA)

2/15 (BOYS A, AAAA quarter-finals and AA, AAA 1st round)

2/16 (GIRLS AAAA quarter-finals and AA, AAA 1st round)

2/18 (BOYS A, AAAA semis and AA, AAA quarter-finals)

2/19 (GIRLS A, AAAA semis and AA, AAA quarter-finals)

2/21 (GIRLS AA, AAA Semis)

2/22, Friday (BOYS Championships and Consolations, all classes)

2/23, Saturday (GIRLS Championships and Consolations, all classes)

Of course, second half league schedules are barely underway in the WVC and approaching halfway in the LL, so there is LOT of basketball to be played before coaches can focus on district playoffs.  But here is a look ahead at some of the interesting possibilities.

BOYS DISTRICT 2 PLAYOFFS AT A GLANCE

Taking a look at the boys side, in AAAA, it is beginning to look like Williamsport may be settling into the #3 seed after back-to-back losses to Holy Redeemer and White Plains (NY).  Because the Millionaires are the only quad-A team in District 4, they qualified for the District 2 tourney by winning their 12th game ten days ago.  The independent schedule that they play requires their seeding position to be determined based on comparing overall season records (then league records are used to seed the other District teams).  Teams have always been very wary of a potential semi-final matchup with Port because a loss means the end of the season.  And this year they have good reason to be nervous, maybe.  It really depends on which version of the Cherry and White takes the court.  The one that outscored Crestwood 19-2 in the 4th period to shock the Comets 55-42, beat Communications Tech and Prep Charter, or the one that got shocked by Montoursville and lost to Holy Redeemer.  Williamsport for some reason has really stepped away from what brought them such huge success earlier in the year, that is, an aggressive, attacking offense that scored lots of points inside (and was complemented by a lights-out shooting touch when teams tried to block the lanes).  Billtown does not have dominant height and has struggled at times against teams with a talented big man.  Both Hazleton (JJ Gundry) and Abington Heights (Spencer Liddic) have strength at that skill position and can provide an interesting test for Allen Taylor’s squad.  Unfortunately, neither the Cougars nor the Comets have an especially strong perimeter game.  As a side note here, the game site and time selections are always a point of contention by Billtown fans.

In Class AAA, there are at least 8 or 9 different teams that have a legitimate chance to grab a championship.  Crestwood was cruising along until their ice-cold 4th quarter against Williamsport.  The Comets then dropped a league loss to Coughlin, which speak volumes to the importance of Kyle Bogumil to this team (he missed the game due to a Rhode Island recruiting visit).  Crestwood would love to get another opportunity to play Holy Redeemer who is finally beginning to gel in the Mark Belenski style with 6-10 Pete Alexis gaining confidence and their guards playing much better recently.  And, don’t forget about Siena-bound Owen Wignot who had a breakout game scoring 26 points against Williamsport.  Then, there are those guard-oriented teams, like Nanticoke, Scranton Prep and Valley View, that can upset anyone, anywhere, anytime.  Maybe playoff time is when sleeper teams (Dallas, Pittston) can pull it all together and get hot.  The Patriots have really struggled to find any rhythm this season, but do feature a great mix of shooters and inside players.  Dallas, by the way, was the only team to defeat Nanticoke in first half league play.  Fasten your seatbelt when this loaded bracket gets underway.

Wyoming Seminary will probably grab the top seed in AA if Holy Cross stumbles somewhere in second half league play.  The Blue Knights will look to finally put their first round exit of last year behind them.  Despite suffering setbacks that have sidelined three starters at times this year, Holy Cross may be a top challenger to Seminary.  Lackawanna Trail, winners of seven straight games, will battle for the title with fellow LL Division 3 teams Elk Lake and Mountain View.  Sometimes teams are hanging out below the radar and might come on strong in the playoffs.  That could be the case with Dunmore who has been getting great play from Matt Maldonato.

The Catholic school restructuring has really reduced the number of school participating in the Class 1A playoffs, but there are three solid teams in Old Forge, Forest City, and Susquehanna.

GIRLS DISTRICT 2 PLAYOFFS AT A GLANCE

In AAAA, all eyes are on state top-ranked Abington Heights and their 2,000-point scorer Becky Burke.  Are the Comets a sure thing to grab the top seed?  That depends on what happens next Monday in Clarks Summit when they host powerful Scranton.  You may recall that the Lady Knights had AH all but beat in their first half matchup, only to let defeat be grabbed away from the hands of victory.  So, potentially Scranton could still win their league and secure a top seed.  Hazleton has battled their way through early season injuries, and may have the ability to play with both Abington and Scranton, especially after a confidence building win against Holy Redeemer and closing in on a possible WVC championship.  The Lady Cougars lost early season games against both AH and Scranton.

In Class AAA, Holy Redeemer might be fighting the we-get-no respect syndrome after wins over Allentown CC and handing Marian Catholic (17-1) their first loss of the season.  But local hoops fans know that championships are not handed out in Harrisburg pressrooms.  The Lady Royals have a deep roster with plenty of talented guards.  Monica Wignot probably needs to stay closer to the basket to assist forward Lindsay Maximovitz underneath.  Valley View has been gaining respect and should gain a high seed.  Next there are a bunch of very good WVC teams that have pulled off big upsets through the season, including Dallas, Berwick, Coughlin, and Pittston.  A surging team from the Lackawanna League is North Pocono and the Lady Trojans might be strong contender by the end of the season.

In AA, Dunmore, Carbondale, and Meyers all currently have undefeated league records and could face the dreaded coin toss to determine seeding positions.  And in 1A, there are only three teams eligible with Old Forge having a decided edge over MMI Prep and Forest City.

DISTRICT 2 BOYS NEWS, NOTES, AND IN-THE-CLUTCH CAGERS

CONGRATULATIONS to a pair of players who reached the 1,000-point plateau last week.  Ryan Murphy (senior) from Delaware Valley scored 17 and netted 1,000 for his career in a loss to Abington Heights.  Jesse Walsh (6-7, junior) from Forest City scored 29 points and netted career number 1,000 in a thrilling double overtime 75-70 win over Susquehanna.  It was a light league schedule in the Wyoming Valley Conference last week as half play did not resume until Friday night.  In the hot and cold department, Adam Fazzini (Crestwood) scored 21 points through 3 periods, but his teammates did not convert a single trey attempt (0 for 12) and Williamsport used their speed and athletic ability to outscore the Comets 19-2 in the final period for a 55-42 win (Comets actually led 24-16 at halftime).  Myer Messinger (6-6 senior) scored 28 points for Dallas in their 58-34 win over Berwick (who only trailed 22-21 at halftime).  Hazleton participated in the Lehigh Valley Hoop Festival, but seemed to lose any chance of staying with the Aces after JJ Gundry (4 points) left the game early following a head injury.  While the Cougar fans reminisced pre-game about the last time these teams faced each other (an OT win for Hazleton over Kobe Bryant led LM team), any thoughts of pulling off the upset quickly disappeared as the Aces took a 17-point halftime lead and rolled to a 75-43 win.  Wyoming Valley West took on Quakertown but dropped a 63-44 game.  The Spartans added a non-league win over Pleasant Valley, 65-50.  Eric Tomcho scored 22 points as West Side Tech defeated St. Rose Academy 55-48 (Mark Ohmon scored 22 for the Phoenix) in a boys and girls doubleheader played at Hoops City.  Do you remember when boys games used to be always played on Tuesdays and Fridays…I miss those days.  Wyoming Seminary placed 3 players in double figures (Alvardo 13, Robinson 13, Byers 12) in a 54-29 win over Hanover.  Owen Wignot (Holy Redeemer) netted 26 points and Pete Alexis scored 21 in their impressive 69-66 win over Williamsport (Jadiah Lynch 21, Seane Ruane 18 for Millionaires).  Williamsport played highly-regarded White Plains (NY) (11-5) and got outscored 47-29 in the middle periods and dropped a 72-60 loss to the Tigers.  It is a 3-game week for Port against District 6 teams as they play at State College (Tuesday) and then host Altoona (Thursday) and Hollidaysburg (Saturday).  Ryan Murphy (Delaware Valley) scored 20 points in a 53-52 win over Honesdale.  Matt Fitzpatrick (Scranton Prep) scored 20 in a 60-34 win over Wallenpaupack.  Jesse Mellin (Honesdale) netted 26 points in a 55-44 win over West Scranton.  Spencer Liddic scored a 3-game total of 68 points last week.  Joel Fetterman (Nanticoke) tied a school record with 8 treys (26 points) as the Trojans defeated GAR, 56-53.  Chris Loman netted a 3-game total of 71 points, including 34 in a win over Elk Lake.  Jeff Madrak (Elk Lake) scored 32 points in a win over Blue Ridge.  Pat Lambert scored 28 points for Mountain View in a win over Susquehanna.  Mark Bevaqua (Holy Cross) scored 23 in a win over Riverside, 61-51.  Stephen Semenza (Old Forge) scored 24 points in a 51-33 win over Lakeland and had 30 more in a 72-52 win over Western Wayne.

In Division 3, Lackawanna Trail won their 7th straight game with wins over Elk Lake (85-77 in overtime), 68-58 over Montrose, and 56-55 over upstart Carbondale.  Keeping atop the lead with the Lions is Forest City.  The Foresters slipped past Mountain View in overtime, 57-52, Susquehanna in double overtime (75-70), and Montrose (42-38).  Carbondale has been a surprise in second half play mostly because they play an effective zone defense and really can frustrate teams.  The Chargers got a pair of impressive wins last week, 53-43 over slumping Susquehanna and 45-44 over first half champion Elk Lake (as teams combined to hit only 6 of 20 free throws).  This week, Elk Lake hosts Forest City on Tuesday while Mountain View entertains Carbondale.  On Friday, Susquehanna plays at Lackawanna Trail and Mt. View hosts Elk Lake.  Next Monday, Trail hosts Forest City in a key matchup.

In Division 1, Abington Heights got three more wins, 61-37 over North Pocono, 56-30 over Wallenpaupack, and 54-33 over West Scranton Monday as Becky Burke netted her 2,000 point.  Scranton kept pace with wins over Delaware Valley (53-24), Scranton Prep (49-28), and North Pocono (62-38) Monday night.  These teams get together in Clarks Summit next Monday night in what may be the most highly anticipated game of the season so far in District 2.  Get there early for that one as a complete sellout is expected.

DIVISION 2

x-Dunmore (4-0, 7-0, 20-1)

Valley View (4-0, 6-1, 16-5)

Old Forge (3-1, 4-3, 14-5)

Holy Cross (3-1, 4-3, 14-7)

Riverside (2-2, 4-3, 10-8)

Lakeland (0-4, 2-5, 6-15)

Mid Valley (0-4, 1-6, 5-16)

Western Wayne (0-4, 0-7, 2-19)

Division 2 has Dunmore and then a bunch of highly-competitive teams fighting for second place and positions in the upcoming district playoffs.  How good are the Lady Bucks?  In their three wins over Mid Valley, Lakeland, and Western Wayne, they scored an average of 63 points and had an average margin of victory of 43 points.  The only negative here is whether Dunmore had been adequately challenged, heading into district and state playoffs next month.  Valley View continues to play well with wins over Western Wayne, Old Forge (44-41 in OT), and Riverside Monday night.  This week, on Thursday Valley View hosts Holy Cross and Dunmore entertains Old Forge.  On Saturday, Dunmore hosts Valley View in a division showdown.
