UPDATED 2/13/08

With the winter storm having its grip on northeastern PA, the District 2 committee postponed their seedings meeting, but did post playoff brackets on their website Tuesday evening. Except for the Boys AAA bracket, all seeds have been determined. The WVC Division 1 playoff game between Crestwood and Coughlin and the WVC Division 2 title matchup between Holy Redeemer and Nanticoke has a direct impact on a number of positions on the AAA bracket. By the way, the District 2 website is a great resource for the latest matchups and the best source for postponements or venue changes as the tourney progresses. Full District 2 playoff matchups summarized below in the Northeast Beat (in the boys and girls sections). The link for the District 2 basketball page is http://www.piaad2.org/index.php?topic=Basketball

Because of the District 2 open-format tourney, there are many first round (home court) games. We’ll mention a few of the more interesting matchups, but in depth previews will wait until the quarter-final round and will be posted next week (probably on Monday). A few teams did opt-out of the tourney, including the Mid Valley boys (AA), St. Michaels boys (1A), and the West Side Tech girls (AA). The Williamsport girls did not reach the minimum 12 games require to qualify for the playoffs. As in past years, the Northeast Beat will provide recaps right through the District 2 championships and continue to follow local teams right to the Bryce Jordan Center in March.

In District 2 Boys AAAA first round action, most of the higher seeded teams will be highly favored to advance. Abington Heights gets the bye and moves right onto the semi-finals. Spencer Liddic suffered a broken finger in their win over Scranton Prep Monday night and his role as an outside scoring threat may be highly diminished. The edge in this bracket may go to Williamsport, although a possible semi-final pairing with Hazleton would be a great matchup of schools with a deep tradition of basketball championships. In Boys AAA, because the Coughlin/Crestwood and Holy Redeemer/Nanticoke games tonight affect so many seeding positions, its tough to anticipate second round matchups at this point. But, this is a loaded bracket and sure to sure to deliver quarter-final games which will end a few successful seasons a bit early. Crestwood seems to be the most balanced team, with Holy Redeemer, Scranton Prep, and Valley View playing very well at the close of the regular season. Dallas and Nanticoke will be right in the mix. In Boys AA, Wyoming Seminary got the top seed with Holy Cross in at #2. Interesting first round matchups include Lackawanna Trail against Carbondale and Mountain View hosting Riverside. Looking to possible second round games, Seminary could play dangerous GAR, Elk Lake could face Dunmore, and Mountain View could challenge Holy Cross. Toward the end of the season, Dunmore has been playing very well along with Lackawanna Trail. In Boys 1A, the consolidation of schools reduced the number of teams to only four. Top-seed Old Forge will be heavily favored to get by MMI Prep and LL Division 3 foes, Susquehanna and Forest City, will battle in the other semi-final.

In Girls action, AAAA top-seed Abington Heights and #2 seed Hazleton get first round byes. Hazleton anticipates a rematch against Scranton, who ended their season last year. The Lady Cougars have steadily improved this season, but ended the regular season with a trio of nail-biting wins over Coughlin, Crestwood, and WVW. Of course, all eyes are on Becky Burke and here state top-ranked 24-0 Lady Comets. A possible Showdown, Part III may be in the mix against Scranton. In Girls AAA, Holy Redeemer gets the top seed. At times this year the Royals have found themselves against more talented foes, but their incredibly deep lineup and skill at the guard position often wore down the other team. It seems that a different player steps up each night and often there are over a dozen players getting into the scoring column. First round games include an interesting matchup between Coughlin and #12 Crestwood. The Lady Comets have been playing great toward the end of the year and may be primed for a big upset. Elsewhere, North Pocono hosts a dangerous #11 seeded West Scranton team. Possible second round games include Holy Redeemer playing a Pittston team that has been up-and-down all season, Coughlin playing a balanced Dallas team, Berwick and their terrific guards against North Pocono, and improving Nanticoke against Valley View. The potential is there for four sensational quarter-final games. In Girls AA, Carbondale won a tie-breaker and got the top seed over #2 Dunmore and #3 Meyers. First round top games include a possible Carbondale vs. GAR matchup and Riverside playing Lake-Lehman. Quarter-final possibilities include Carbondale playing a very good Lake-Lehman with freshman of the year Selena Adamshick, and Meyers playing Holy Cross. In Girls 1A, there are only three teams eligible with Old Forge being a strong favorite to bring home the gold medals,

WYOMING VALLEY CONF. DIVISION 1 SECOND HALF PLAYOFF

Crestwood (5-1) vs. Coughlin (5-1) (Wednesday 2/13, Pittston HS 7 pm)

Last week, Wilkes-Barre Coughlin got a layup from Jared Berry (12 points) with two seconds remaining to defeat Hazleton (48-46) for the first time in 15 tries this decade. The Crusaders rallied for the win by outscoring HAHS 21-14 in the final period. Ethan Eicchorst scored 20 points in the Cougar loss. That upset changed the complexion of the Hazleton vs. Crestwood Saturday showdown, turning it into a must-win game for Mike Josephs squad. The Cougars led at halftime (17-16), but Adam Fazzini got red-hot, scoring all 15 of his points in the second half and leading the Comets to a resounding 47-32 win. Crestwood has a very balanced lineup and convinced even the most stubborn skeptics that they are clearly a better team this year, defeating Hazleton in both league matchups for the first time ever. Coughlin defeated Berwick 53-41 while Crestwood then got by Tunkhannock 57-31 to setup a second half playoff game tonight. If Coughlin wins, the two teams will have to play once again for the all-season division championship (at a site TBD on Thursday night).

WYOMING VALLEY CONFERENCE DIVISION 2 CHAMPIONSHIP

Holy Redeemer vs. Nanticoke (Wednesday 2/13, Wilkes Univ. 7 pm)

Holy Redeemer got 26 points from Owen Wignot and 20 from their 6-10 freshmen Pete Alexis to defeat Dallas Monday night 56-53. That win, combined with a stunning 51-37 upset by Hanover over Nanticoke, gave Holy Redeemer the second half title outright. Pat Murray and Myer Messinger each scored 16 points for Dallas who rallied with a 13-4 run to almost pull out the road win over the Royals. Nanticoke and Holy Redeemer have played a pair of memorable games this year, with each team getting a win.

ABINGTON HEIGHTS CLAIMS LACKAWANNA D-1 CHAMPIONSHIP

After Scranton Prep won back-to-back wins over Abington Heights last week, many observers thought that the Cavaliers had finally learned how to beat the Comets. Prep top players Chris Dende and Matt FitzPatrick had both put forth impressive performances, slicing through the patented Ken Bianchi matchup zone defense to 55-45 win (in the second half finale) and 57-41 win (in a second half playoff). The Monday championship game was played at Carbondale, on of those high school gyms that has no glitz, but yet oozes tradition and crowd noise reverberates better than any place in District 2. This game had everything, including a couple key injuries. Chris Dende suffered an early wrist injury and Spencer Liddic played through much of the game with an undiagnosed broken finger. In the first half it was Liddic (8 points) and FitzPatrick (9 points) led the way, with AH holding a slim 22-21 advantage going into the locker room. It was in the final period when things really heated up and sent the crowd into a frenzy. The Comets had built some breathing room (37-31) before Billy Joyce went to the line for 3 foul shots. The moment could have been a pivotal one for the Comets as Ken Bianchi came very close to drawing a technical, protesting the lack of any ref signal that Joyce had attempted a trey on the previous shot. A few minutes later, after a pair of free throws from Pat Mineo and a trey by Joyce, Prep had completed the comeback with a 7-0 run and grabbed a 38-37 lead (with 5 minutes remaining). As the game continued to go back and forth, it became clear that Spencer Liddic (16 points) needed to get back into the offense flow. He hit a nifty reverse layup to tie the game at 40 and then got his own rebound putback to give the Comets a 45-44 lead for good with under 2 minutes remaining. AH put the game away from the free throw line, 48-44. A number of Comet players stepped up in this title win, including Mike Degaratis (9 points) and Cory Spangenberg (15 points). Some teams just seem to bring out the best from each other on the court and that is certainly the case with these two teams.

HOLY CROSS WRAPS UP LACKAWANNA DIVISION 2 CHAMPIONSHIP

Last Saturday afternoon Holy Cross had built a seemingly commanding 37-20 lead on Valley View midway through the third period. However the Cougars, behind Kyle Colachino (21 points) and Dave Abdalla (16 points), put together a 16-2 rally and tied the game at 42 with 5:38 remaining in the game. Nico Fricchione was the Crusaders top scorer with 21 points as Holy Cross captured their first ever basketball division championship with a 56-54 win.

ELK LAKE CAPTURES LACKAWANNA DIVISION 3 TITLE

Elk Lake, the division first half champion, had slumped to a 3-4 second half record and appeared to be a clear underdog to Lackawanna Trail who was on of the hottest teams down the stretch. However, the Warriors came out determined and grabbed a quick 14-2 lead which ballooned to 17 points midway through the second period (27-10). A.J. Lunger (19 points) played fantastic for Elk Lake but he found himself in early foul trouble, picking up his third foul halfway through the second period. At that time, their reserve guards had some trouble controlling the ball and Trail began to chip away, ending the first half on a 7-0 run (down 27-17). The Lions continued their comeback in the third period, as Chris Loman nailed a trey to tie the game at 36 before Jeff Madrak (14 points) netted a free throw to give EL a 37-36 lead heading into the final period. The Trail coaching staff sensed that the Warriors were looking very fatigued in the last 2 minutes of the period and challenged them to dig deeper and take the lead. After a Christian Sunseri (19 points) again knotted the game at 44 (at the 4:31 mark), the officials really let the teams play some physical ball. A trey by AJ Lunger and several trips to the free throw line by the Warriors created another lead (51-46). At that point Elk Lake began to be very patient and put away the 63-56 win from the foul line. There were a couple of other noteworthy performances in this one. Casey Cathrall scored 16 for Trail and Mike Greenwood (Elk Lake) played a very gutsy game, netting 8 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.

DISTRICT 2 BOYS NEWS, NOTES, AND IN-THE-CLUTCH CAGERS

Wyoming Seminary won the WVC Division 3 championship with an undefeated league campaign. Greg Sam (Holy Redeemer) hit a trey with 1 second remaining in overtime to defeat Nanticoke 56-53 (Josh Niewinski scored 23 in the loss). Tyseane Whitt (GAR) scored 21 points (5 treys) in a 52-31 win over Meyers. Kyle Arnaud (Dallas) hit a trey with under 30 seconds left to get by GAR, 49-46. Josh Niewinski (Nanticoke) scored 30 points in a 69-62 win over Wyoming Area (he added 23 more in a win over Meyers). Bernie Edmonds (Wyoming Area) netted 29 points in an 80-50 loss to Holy Redeemer. Lackawanna Trail raised $500 in a Coaches against Cancer fundraiser. Pat Lambert scored 20 points in a 66-61 loss to Lackawanna Trail (teams combined to hit only 27 of 54 free throws). Kyle Colachino (Valley View) scored 22 points in a 44-39 overtime win over Lakeland (he added 21 more in a second half loss to Holy Cross). Steve Semenza netted 25 and Mark Alexander netted 20 in a 65-56 upset win over Holy Cross. Tyler Breznitsky (MMI Prep) scored 21 points in a loss to Lake-Lehman (he added 23 in a win over West Side Tech). Eric Tomcho (West Side Tech) scored 28 points in a 77-71 OT win over St. Michaels (Tide Pasture scored 29). Mike Eckman (Lake-Lehman) scored 21 points in a win over St. Michaels (he added 24 more in a loss to Northwest). Kyle Hillard (Northwest) scored 24 points in a win over MMI. JJ Gundry netted 22 points for Hazleton in a surprisingly close 64-62 win over WVW. Eric Steinmetz (North Pocono) scored 24 points in a win over Honesdale. Ryan Murphy (Delaware Valley) scored 24 points in a win over North Pocono.

WILLIAMSPORT ENDS REGULAR SEASON WITH 17-7 MARK

The Williamsport Millionaires got 22 points from Isaiah Twine, 18 from Sean Ruane, and 14 from Thomas James in a 77-60 win over Danville (14-9) last Thursday. Twine, in particular, played a terrific game, getting into a more aggressive style in the win over the Ironmen. Port finished their regular season Saturday night with a 72-56 win over University City (6-18). Again, Twine led the way with 23 points and their junior guard Ruane netted 14. A trio of improving reserves also came into the game to give Billtown a boost against the Jaguars who were much better than their record indicated. The Cherry and White now advance to the District 2/3 AAAA quarter-finals when they will host Wyoming Valley West on Friday night. They will be seeking their first district championship since 2002.

LLHOOPS NORTHEAST BEAT BOYS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Adam Fazzini (6-5 junior) from Crestwood had a big week for the Comets. He scored 20 points in a 57-39 win over Pittston and then added 20 more in a 57-37 win over Wyoming Valley West. Adam then keyed a 10-2 run (scoring 15 second half points) to turn a 1-point halftime deficit at Hazleton into a lead and eventual 47-32 victory over the defending league champion Cougars.

A.J. Lunger (6-2 senior) from Elk Lake withstood some second quarter foul trouble and scored 19 points (including 10 final period free throws) to lead his Warriors to a 63-56 win over Lackawanna Trail to clinch the Lackawanna League Division 3 championship.
