SPECIAL PLAYOFF UPDATE 2/18/08

Championship matchups are all set in District 2, including consolation games in both AA and AAA classifications. There have been some great storylines. In AAAA is the continued rise back to statewide hoops prominence by Williamsport as seen in their 54-51 overtime win over perennial district powerhouse Hazleton. An early quarter-final round exit by #2 seed Holy Redeemer in Boys AAA as they were defeated by Dallas 64-58. Wyoming Seminary, the top seed in 2A, lost to an inspired group of Grenadiers from GAR, 47-37. On the girls side, possibly the biggest headline came not on the hardwoods but in the school cafeteria where a freak accident at Abington Heights (table dropping onto the foot of Becky Burke) caused moments of high anxiety among the Lady Comet coaching staff. Burke, by the way, scored 28 points against WVW in a semi-final matchup Tuesday night. The Friday boys championship games are listed below. But with the anticipation of anywhere between 3 to 7 inches of snow expected, postponements are not out of the question. That would cause a Super Saturday of District 2 basketball, filled with possibly 6 boys and 6 girls games. The district basketball link is below and the best sources for any changes in game days or sites.

DISTRICT 2 BOYS CHAMPIONSHIPS

AAAA

(1) Abington Heights (21-6) vs. (3) Williamsport (19-7)

Top seeded Abington Heights withstood continuous stall ball from the Warriors for the first three minutes of the game, although the strategy worked for the first period as Delaware Valley held a 5-4 lead. The Comets outscored DV 14-7 in the second period to grab an 18-12 halftime lead and then put the game away via some great defense (9 steals) and Spencer Liddic’s 14 points in a 43-34 victory. Their opponent, Williamsport, trailed for majority of the game against Hazleton but finally made their move after trailing 45-38 to tie the game at 45 (entering overtime). The Cougars guards played inspired defense against highly touted Port backcourt of Twine (20 points) and Ruane (held to only 7 points). Cougar big man JJ Gundry closed out his stellar career with 21 points. Hazleton only converted 4 of 10 free throws in the loss. More significantly, the win possibly propels the underclassmen filled Millionaire lineup to be in position for playoff success in future seasons. The title matchup between Abington Heights and Williamsport should be a close game, despite most observers giving Billtown an edge. The inside matchup between Port junior forward Dontahe Jordan and AH Spencer Liddic is key. The Millionaires get a much-decided advantage on their perimeter game, but the Comets play tenacious defense and must deny penetration and try to create some turnovers. The champion moves on to play the District 11 runnerup (Pocono Mountain West or Bethlehem Liberty) with the loser taking on the formidable challenge of playing the District 1 champion (Chester or Norristown).

AAA

TITLE: (1) Crestwood (23-4) vs. (3) Scranton Prep (20-7)

CONSOLATION: (5) Valley View (21-7) vs. (7) Dallas (17-8)

Top seeded Crestwood advanced to the championship game with convincing wins over Pittston (37-20) and Valley View (43-24) as the Comets stormed back from a 2-point halftime deficit and ended the game on a 16-2 run. Scranton Prep shot a miserable 15% in the first half against Coughlin, but still gained a 45-39 win over the Crusaders. The Cavaliers added a 56-42 win over Dallas by outscoring the Mountaineers 19-7 in the third period. Chris Dende netted 17 and Matt FitzPatrick scored 16 in the victory. The championship game between Crestwood and Scranton Prep will be an interesting matchup of teams that have been possibly playing the best district basketball toward the send of the season. Both teams play excellent defense, have extremely capable guards, and feature versatile inside playmakers. Matt FitzPatrick and Adam Fazzini are the catalysts for these teams with inside forces Jared Hill (Prep) and Kyle Bogumil (Crestwood). The difference in this could come down to perimeter shooting. If the Cavaliers (Billy Joyce or Chris Dende) get hot, this one could go right down to the final buzzer. The winner takes on the District 4 runnerup (Danville or Selinsgrove) while the loser takes on the District 1 runnerup (Pottstown or Great Valley). In the consolation, to determine which teams advances to states, Valley View takes on Dallas. Valley View has some great guards (Dave Abdalla, Kyle Colachino) and versatile big man Scott Fenton, but the Dallas inside duo of Myer and Henry Messinger will be quite the obstacle for the Cougars. The winner of this game moves on to play the District 3 champion (Susquehanna Township or Steel-High).

AA

TITLE: (2) Holy Cross (23-3) vs. (9) GAR (18-9)

CONSY: (4) Northwest (14-11) vs. (6) Dunmore (18-9)

Second-seeded Holy Cross advanced to the title game with wins over Mountain View (58-37, Nico Fricchione and Mark Bevacqua combined for 40 points) and Dunmore (67-56). Their win over their cross-town rival was a terrific battle that featured an incredible 16-3 rally by the Bucks to erase a 43-33 deficit and take a 51-48 lead with 4:30 remaining. Louis Cipriano led the way for the Crusaders with 17 points (5 treys). GAR (the #9 seed) followed up their 47-37 upset over the #1 seed (Wyoming Seminary) with a 43-35 win over Northwest (outscoring the Rangers 17-6 in the second quarter). The Grenadiers have been getting steady play from AJ Magda and Breon Phillips. When Tyseane Whitt isn’t lighting up the scoreboard, he is making penetration and finding an open man. Holy Cross has the best inside-outside combo (Bevacqua and Fricchione) in District 2 and one of the best coaches guiding them. The D-2 champ next takes on the winner of a play-in game between the District 1 runnerup and the District 3, #4 team. The loser takes on the District 2 runnerup (Wyalusing vs. Hughesville loser). Northwest takes on a very strong Dunmore team who almost upset Holy Cross Wednesday night. The Bucks have developed a great lineup led by sophomore guard Mike Ehnot. The winner moves on to states to play the District 4 champion (Wyalusing vs. Hughesville winner).

A

(1) Old Forge (16-9) vs. (3) Susquehanna (14-10)

Top-seeded Old Forge (15-9) rolled over Freeland MMI Prep 81-43 as Stephen Semenza netted 23 points. The Blue Devils have a strong lineup highlighted by Semenza (6-3 senior, 19 ppg), Mark Alexander (5-10 senior, 9 ppg), and Kyle McMyne (6-1 senior). Susquehanna advanced with 48-43 win over Forest City as Brent Keyes (14) and Kirk Fallon (12) paced the Sabers. The Susquehanna duo of Fallon (5-11 senior, 11.5 ppg) and Keyes (6-6 senior, 15 ppg) will need a big game if they hope to upset the Devils. The winner takes on the District 4 runnerup (North Penn vs. Lourdes Regional loser) while the runnerup will take on the District 4 champion (North Penn vs. Lourdes Regional winner)..

UPDATED 2/18/08

CRESTWOOD WRAPS UP WVC DIVISION 1 CHAMPIONSHIP
Kyle Bogumil was the difference this time around as he scored 15 points and led his Comets to a second half title and overall WVC Division 1 championship with a 42-26 win over Coughlin.  Mark Atherton‚s team used a 6-0 run to stretch a 28-23 lead out to 11 points and put the game away in the second half.  Adam Fazzino netted 11 points and Joe Chrismer continues to play well at the guard position for the Comets.  With the win, Crestwood secured the top seed in the AAA playoffs and will next play Pittston area Monday night.

HOLY REDEEMER CRUISES TO WVC DIVISION 2 CHAMPIONSHIP
Holy Redeemer has won 11 of their last 12 games, and captured the WVC Division 2 championship in convincing style last Thursday with a 65-31 win over first half champion Nanticoke.  Pete Alexis, their 6-10 freshman, scored 17 points, and when he got into some first half foul trouble, Siena-bound Owen Wignot picked up the slack and scored 15 points.  The Royals defense thwarted the Trojans long-range shooting game all night, although it must be noted that two of Ken Bartuska‚s perimeter aces (Sean Bieski and Joel Fetterman) were out with injuries.  Both teams continue into Class AAA tourney action this week.

DISTRICT 2 BOYS FIRST ROUND RECAPS AND QUARTER PREVIEWS

In Boys AAAA
, top seeded Abington Heights (20-6) got a first round bye and has a full week layoff before playing in the semi-finals Monday night.  The Comets will take on #4 seed Delaware Valley (13-12) who knocked off rival Wallenpaupack Friday night, 59-49.  The Warriors outscored the Buckhorns 13-6 in the final period and got 29 points from Ryan Murphy and 16 from Dom Hopkins in the win.  Abington Heights and DV both compete in the same LL division.  AH swept the season series, winning 57-41 (on 12/18) and 69-36 (on 1/23) so over-confidence could be a problem for Ken Bianchi‚s squad.  The Comets feature 6-5 senior Spencer Liddic (18.4 ppg) and a host of gusty role players who will need to step up and establish some perimeter game if they are going win a district championship.  One thing is for sure, the Comets bring a determined intensity onto the court, a big reason how they managed to win an impressive 20 wins already this season.  The Warriors have scoring threat Murphy (18.4 ppg), but lost a key starter during the season.  In the other bracket, #2 seed Hazleton (18-7) used their height advantage to secure a 67-36 win over #7 seed Scranton.  The Cougars got a great game from JJ Gundry (6-6 senior) 21 points and Ethan Eicchorst 20 points.  The highlight of the game was Joe Kost to Gundry alley-oop slam dunk that they ran to perfection early in the second period.  Although the Cougars dominated inside the paint, they still had moments of sloppy play and continue to struggle from 3-point land.  One bright spot for Scranton was the emergence of several younger players, such as freshman Tom Fisch who scored 10 points for the Knights.  Hazleton next plays #3 seed Williamsport (18-7), a winner over Wyoming Valley West 72-67 in OT.  To say that WVW played well after being crushed by the Millionaires 76-49 back in December is the understatement of the week.  The Spartans had several legitimate opportunities to pull out this game (leading at halftime 30-27), but the Port guards refused to lose, and junior guard Sean Ruane in particular, almost single-handedly pulled this one out for Williamsport, scoring 23 of his 28 points in the second half (including a mind-boggling 8 treys).  With Jadiah Lynch, Dontahe Jordan, and Blake Edwards out of the Cherry and White lineup, Ruane and fellow guard Isaiah Twine (20 points) dazzled the Magic Dome partisan home crowd.  In the loss, WVW top scorers were Jack Crossin (19 points) and Justic Pacovsky (16 points).  The matchup between Williamsport and Hazleton brings back many hoops memories for local fans.  Mike Joseph will need to develop of gameplan to limit the Williamsport penetration and make sure that no one gets left open on the perimeter to drain an easy trey.  Hazleton does have a height advantage, but only if it can pay dividends in a big rebounding advantage, or else it could be a long night for the Cougars.  This has the potential to be one of the better games of the season, but only if the Cougar guards can keep the Port guards from running wild.  JJ Gundry (15 ppg) can really punctuate his senior season with a strong performance in this matchup.

In Boys AAA
action, all of the higher seeds held on and that sets up on the most exciting quarter-final rounds seen in many years.  Top-seeded Crestwood (21-4) got a first round bye and advances to play #8 Pittston Area (13-12), a 57-38 winner over North Pocono.  In that win Carl Stravinski scored 18 points and helped the Patriots double up the Trojans 34-17 in the second half.  Pittston and Crestwood are rivals in the WVC Division 1 and already played twice this season with the Comets winning handily both times, 62-37 and 57-39.  Despite the Patriots having nice size and good ball-handling, they just do not seem to match up well with the Comets.  But again, this could be one of those games where coaches must warn against looking ahead or over-confidence.  Mark Atherton has established himself as one of the top coaches in District 2 and he has a great lineup, anchored by versatile playmaker Adam Fazzini (18 ppg).  This winner of this game will next play the winner between #4 Nanticoke (17-9) and #5 Valley View (20-6).  Nanticoke, minus injured sharpshooter Sean Bieski slipped past Western Wayne, 54-44 as Joel Fetterman scored 13 and Josh Niewinski netted 12 (Mitch Vitovsky scored 18 for WW).  Valley View, finally managed to shake off a feisty effort from Honesdale (who led 22-20 at halftime) to defeat the Hornets 57-46 as Kyle Colachino scored 24 in the win (the teams combined to only hit 25 of 45 free throws).  The quarter-final matchup between Nanticoke and Valley View provides an ample supply of slick-handling, hot-shooting guards.  The difference in this one might come down to the play of Scott Fenton (12 ppg), Valley View‚s big man who roams all over the court.  Interestingly, this matchup is being played in Plymouth, a much longer travel distance for the Cougars.  Nanticoke may be able to assert some home advantage if they can get their fans out to see this one.  In the lower half of the bracket, #3 Scranton Prep (17-7) will take on #6 seed Coughlin (17-8).  Scranton Prep advanced with a very challenging 63-55 win over Wyoming Area (the game was tied at halftime, 26-26).  Top Cavalier guard Chris Dende did not play due to a wrist injury that happened early in their division title game against Abington Heights.  Dende averages 14.6 ppg, so filling that scoring gap may be quite difficult if he remains out of the Prep lineup.  Billy Joyce (15 points) and Will Wertz (14) led the way for Prep while Bernice Edmonds muscled his way to another big game for the Warriors with 20 points.  Coughlin, a team with little inside height, but perimeter talent, moved on with a close 33-30 win over #11 Berwick.  The Crusaders may run into some real problems handling Matt FitzPatrick (14.5 ppg) and center Jared Hill in this one.  The final quarter-final matches up fellow WVC Division 2 rivals Holy Redeemer (#2 seed, 20-6) against Dallas (#7 seed, 16-7).  Holy Redeemer seems to have finally found their niche and team chemistry that seemed so elusive all season long.  6-10 freshman Pete Alexis had a huge game scoring 24 points in their opening round 64-44 win over Tunkhannock (Owen Wignot added 16).  Dallas, meanwhile, got 22 points from Myer Messinger (15.5 ppg) and advanced with a 54-41 win over West Scranton.  These two teams met twice in the regular season with the Royals winning both, 49-39 and 56-53.  There is something to be said about teams that often learn how to beat an opponent and this game is shaping up to be one of the top District playoff games Monday night.  According to head coach Mark Belenski, the Royals are playing their best basketball of the season, but can Dallas climb the mountain and knock them off?

In Boys AA
playoffs, the caliber of teams might not be as high as in the 3A classification, but there is no lack of high drama in the quarter-final matchups.  Wyoming Seminary has the top seed and got a first round 67-47 win over Blue Ridge as sophomore Mike Alvardo netted 26 points, twice his season average.  The Blue Knights (22-1) next play a very dangerous GAR team (16-9), fresh off a 62-45 thumping of Lake-Lehman as freshman guard Mike Polakoski scored 16 points.  These two teams did meet earlier in the season, back on December 18 when Seminary posted a 44-29 win over the Grenadiers.  Many observers like to point to the fact that Seminary competed in the un-highly competitive WVC Division 3, whereas GAR is battle tested in Division 2, taking on the likes of Nanticoke, Holy Redeemer and Dallas.  That point is balanced out when the Blue Knights lineup of Byers, Saidman, Robinson, Swaback, and Alvardo is fully considered.  This is a very good team that has just not had much of a chance to play through much adversity this season.  GAR brings in some height from Breon Phillips, but their playmaker is Tyseane Whitt, a great scorer who can beat his defender off the dribble.  In the other matchup, #4 seed Northwest (13-10) takes on #12 seed Carbondale (11-14).  Northwest rolled over Montrose, 41-22 while Carbondale made an incredible turnaround after trailing 43-30 midway through the 3rd period.  The Chargers placed four players in double figures and outscored Lackawanna Trail 23-3 in the final period to go on to a 62-48 win over the Lions.  There is no reason to think that Carbondale cannot keep their magic going for at least one more round.  In the lower bracket, #2 seed Holy Cross (21-3) advanced with a 63-28 win over Lakeland as Nico Fricchione scored 13 points for the Crusaders.  They will take on #7 seed Mountain View (16-8) who posted a close 47-42 win over Riverside as Pat Lambert netted 20 points (4 above his season average).  This is actually one of two terrific quarter-finals matchups between LL Division 2 and 3 top teams.  Holy Cross is the merger between the former Bishop Hannan and Bishop O‚Hara schools.  Although their record seems to indicate that they made this transition without a glitch, nothing could be further from the truth.  Developing the right on-court mix and working through countless injuries have been a daily occurrence for head coach Al Callejas.  Their inside-outside combo of Nico Fricchione (14 ppg) and Mark Bevaqua (13 ppg) have been as good any seen in District 2 this year.  Mountain View plays a variety of style, going with the famous Division 3 run-and-gun occasionally, but will slow it down and play deliberate also.  The key to their success is their floor leader, Pat Lambert, a super-smooth 6-4 senior.  The winner of this game takes on either #3 Elk Lake (17-7) or #6 Dunmore (17-8).  Elk Lake advanced with a dramatic 63-62 win over Wilkes-Barre Meyers.  Meyers missed several opportunities in the closing minutes to put to game away (behind Frank Triniewski‚s 26 points).  Dunmore got 18 points (4 treys) from their sophomore point guard Mike Ehnot, grabbed an early 17-4 lead and cruised to a 61-43 win over Hanover.  The Bucks are one of those football rich schools that needed just some time to gel into a formidable team.  They have been getting great play from their underclassmen, juniors Matt Maldonato (10 ppg) and Brian Copeland (6-4), plus soph Pat Ross (10 ppg guard).  Elk Lake, benefitting from their Division 3 championship, advanced to a #3 seed, even though they really struggled through much of the second half of league play.  Their playmakers are AJ Lunger and Jeff Madrak, with some very gusty inside physical play from Mike Greenwood.  Maybe the toughest decision here is not which teams will make it to the next round, but which game is go see.

, the number of schools has been reduced due to school closures and mergers.  In fact, playoff games do not even begin until Monday night when the semi-finals are on tap.  Top-seeded Old Forge (15-9) is a heavy favorite to defeat Freeland MMI Prep (9-15) as the Blue Devils bring a strong lineup into the tourney with Stephen Semenza (6-3 senior, 19 ppg), Mark Alexander (5-10 senior, 9 ppg), and Kyle McMyne (6-1 senior).  MMI counters with their high-scorer Tyler Breznitsky (5-8 junior, 20 ppg) and Justin Yakubowski (5-10 junior).  The other semi-final matches up LL Division 3 rivals Forest City (12-11) and Susquehanna (13-10).  The Foresters and Sabers staged two of the most dramatic games of the entire season, as Forest City swept the league series; first winning 63-62 in 3OT (on 12/20) and then posting a 75-70 win in 2OT (on 1/24).  Maybe the District 2 committee should have moved the second double-header start time out about an hour when these two teams get together.  Forest city is paced by Jess Walsh (6-7 junior, 1 6ppg) while Susquehanna has the great duo of Kirk Fallon (5-11 senior, 11.5 ppg) and Brent Keyes (6-6 senior, 15 ppg).

GIRLS BASKETBALL     GIRLS BASKETBALL     GIRLS BASKETBALL

DISTRICT 2 GIRLS FIRST ROUND RECAPS AND QUARTER PREVIEWS

In Girls AAAA
, top-seeded and undefeated Abington Heights (24-0) has not played since February 6 (a 13 day layoff) and will take on #4 seed Wyoming Valley West (10-15), a 65-54 Saturday winner over Wallenpaupack.  In that game, 6-2 soph center Sami Himlin netted 19 points while fellow soph Nina Kigouri scored 17 (Emily Silsby had 20 and Annie Vega had 17 for the Lady Buckhorns in the loss).  The Lady Comets defeated WVW back on January 19, 64-22, but no doubt that the Lady Spartans have developed some better floor consistency since that blowout loss.  Becky Burke (25.8 ppg) and Jamie Halloran (10.5 ppg) lead AH, but other role players such as Kim Kalinoski, Dakin Hewlett, and Liz Kilzi have all stepped up to make key plays throughout the season.  The #2 seed, Hazleton Area (18-6) also had a first round bye as a result of claiming the WVC division 1 title.  The Lady Cougars have kept their fans on the edge of their seats the last several games, needing a steal and dramatic drive to seal their win over WVW.  As their all-everything leader Alyssa Flanagan (5-8 junior, 13.7 ppg) goes, so go the Cougars.  Hazleton will meet #3 seed Scranton, a 60-15 winner over Delaware Valley (Lachelle Miller 14, Nashira Turner 17).  The Lady Knights rolled over Hazleton 56-35 back on December 5 and there is every indication that Scranton behind Nashira Turner (5-10 senior, 11 ppg), Liz Borgia (5-8 junior, 10 ppg), Lachelle Miller (5-4 soph), and Terika Turner (6-0 junior) can be every bit as good this time around.  The intangible here is that the Hazleton players and coaches want this win badly and they hope to possibly catch Scranton looking ahead to another potential showdown with Abington Heights.

In Girls AAA
, top seed Holy Redeemer (19-4) got a first round bye and will next play #9 seed Scranton Prep, an upset winner over Pittston 58-43.  Maybe the fact that Prep won wasn‚t as surprising as the margin of victory, as the Classics were led by Celia Rader (22) and Sarah Walsh (18).  Prep has battled through injuries all season while Pittston has had their own share of recent injuries, including losing top shooting guard, senior Christen D‚Eliseo to an ACL.  Considering their talent and team depth, Holy Redeemer is the heavy favorite in this tourney.  Scranton Prep will have their hands full in this one.  The winner will take on either #4 Dallas (18-7) or #5 Coughlin (17-7).  Dallas got by Western Wayne 75-39 in the first round while Coughlin edged upset-minded Crestwood 60-55.  Coughlin was paced by Lauren McGinley (18 points, 16 rebounds) and Laura Taylor (16 points).  Although Crestwood made a quick playoff exit, their future looks very bright as they were led by freshman Chelsea Corneluis (16) and soph Carissa Gegaris (15).  Dallas and Coughlin met each other back on December 15 with the Lady Mounts prevailing 49-44. However, Coughlin has really developed since then and this should be an excellent matchup.  Dallas is led by forward Danielle Krawetz and senior guard Erin Delaney.  Melissa Gorski is back from her ACL injury and a big addition to their lineup.  In the other bracket, #3 Berwick (16-9) plays #6 North Pocono (18-7).  Berwick advanced with a 56-25 win over Tunkhannock as their guard tandem of Lillian Carlin and Katlin Michaels each netted 16 points.  North Pocono finally pulled away from West Scranton (who only trailed 36-35 with less than 3 minutes remaining) in their 43-35 win over the Lady Invaders.   This is another great matchup and it will be interesting to see how North Pocono can contain Carlin and Michaels.  In the final quarter-final, #7 Nanticoke (14-10) will play #2 Valley View.  Valley View got by Wyoming Area 45-25 as Shannon Krajkovich scored 14 points.  Nanticoke placed four players in double figures (led by Leigh Ann Rentko with 19) in their 66-44 win over Honesdale.  This game probably has the highest potential for an upset as the Trojanettes have been playing very well as of late.

In Girls AA
, #17 seed GAR survived a play-in game against Lakeland (48-45) as Paige Venson scored 21 points.  The Lady Grenadiers then went up against top seeded Carbondale (23-2) on Saturday.  In that game, the Chargerettes held a 42-38 lead after three periods, but Paige Venson scored 12 of her 23 points in the final period to pull off the surprising upset.  Monica Spence added 19 points in the win.  GAR next plays #8 seed Riverside who got 17 points from Angela Dente and slipped past Lake-Lehman, 59-56.  Then Lady Vikes held Selena Adamshick (19 points) to only a single fourth period point and survived a great shooting effort from Gaby Olshemski (20 points, 5 treys).  GAR has only 6 players on their roster, but has a trio of sensational players, led by Venson (15 ppg).  In the other game, # 4 seed Montrose (13-11) will play #5 seed Wyoming Seminary (11-10).  Montrose got 17 points from Julia Koloski and 16 from Monica Turner to get by Lackawanna Trail while Daniela Donocikova netted 21 in Seminary‚s 54-45 win over Hanover.  Montrose is one of those teams that has been playing very well in the second half of the season and could put together another win or two.  In the lower bracket, #2 seed Dunmore is in a class by themselves and it would be a major upset if the Lady Bucks get a serious scare at any point in this district tourney.  They got by #15 seed Mid Valley 59-10 as Lauren Carra (25 points) guided them to a 24-1 lead after the first quarter.  Dunmore next plays #7 seed Northwest, a 42-32 winner over Blue Ridge.  Brittany Piatt netted 20 points as the Lady Rangers pulled away from a 2-point lead after three periods.  Finally, #3 seed Meyers (a 43-34 winner over Elk Lake) will next play #6 seed Holy Cross.  Holy Cross advanced with a come-from-behind 53-44 win over Mountain View (who led 36-33 after the 3rd quarter).  Their center Julie Kosin scored 10 points and teammate Lauren Rogan netted her career 1,000 point.  Meyers has a terrific junior in Christa Tutella (14 ppg) and gained their #3 position because of their undefeated league and WVC Division championship season.  On paper if would appear that the Lady Crusaders have an edge, but after their struggles with Mt. View, this one could be a tossup.  Meyers went from a team that nobody picked to get anywhere this year, to a team that is one win away from a possible state qualifying matchup.

In Girls 1A,
top seed Old Forge (16-7) gets a semi-final round bye because there are only three 1A girls teams in District 2.  The Lady Blue Devils will be heavily favored to win the title behind their top players Kim Kaville (14 ppg) and Aleca Semenza (9 ppg).  In the other game, #2 seed MMI Prep (5-18) does have junior Morgan Palermo (14 ppg) and will face Forest City (6-18) who features Cassie Endmann (terrific 5-0 freshman) and Amanda Collins (a 5-5 sophomore).
