District 3 Playoffs

AAAA

Quarterfinals--Giant Center, Hershey

Reading 64 Daniel Boone 39

The Knight of Reading rolled Berks Co. DBoone in the first game of the triple header at Hershey. The Blazers opened the game with a 2-3 zone as they tried to force Reading to win from the perimeter. Reading Bigs (6'4" Xavier Mumford and  6'5" Trentity Burdine) went to work with dump downs and follows. The Knights had a 6-0 spurt followed by 7-0 run to end the quarter at 20-11.

Reading turned up the heat by switching from a diamond trap to a 2-2-1 full court to confuse the Blazers. 6' Soph guard, Jalan Brandford, hit a three to start a run and finished the run with another three ball. Burdine scored 8 pts during the second period. The Knights were safely on top 38-22 at the half.

Reading continued to pour in on in the third..the Knights opened up a 51-27 lead late in the third, capped off by a thunderous dunk by Burdine.

Reading will play Wilson for a chance to go to the AAAA finals Sat. at the Giant Center.

Game 2

Wilson 44 Warwick 23

Wilson smacked down the second LL team (McCaskey in the first round) this week by handily beating Warwick. The Bulldogs are the second seed but seem to get no respect since 6'5" Jn, Zach Zweizig has been hurt. The Bulldogs did not fare well in the Berks Co. playoffs but have been very, very, good last week.

A few quick fouls on Warwick set the tone for what would be a long- can we say morning? – in Hershey.  Both teams played half court man with the Warriors more perimeter oriented and the Dogs more of a pound it inside type of team. Of course for the perimeter team to have a chance they have to make shoots and made very few of them today.

The Warriors of Warwick took a 5-0 lead but that was about it for the high-lights. Wilson stormed back by having 4 different players score in quarter one. The first ended at 11-7.

Warwick would only score 1 point in the next quarter as the half ended 25-8, Wilson. Wilson put it away in the third by limiting the Warriors to only a bucket.

Wilson played well with fine point guard play from Sam Marrella and domination by their 6'7"center, Jereme Good.

Wilson will play Reading Tuesday at the Giant Center.

Game 3

Hempfield 60 PM 54

Check out LL insider blow by blow of the game.

Top seeded Hempfield continued to win. They beat LL Section 1 rival Penn Manor for the third time this season. The Knights used their inside strength and depth to control the game early in the first half. PM suffered through some foul trouble, but hung in as the Knights led by 10 at the break. Both teams used man defense. The Comets tried some triangle and 2, but the Knights hurt it with drives and put backs.  PM put more pressure up the floor. The Knights settled into a switching man and jamb the paint defense.

PM came storming back in the third to tie the game. With the Comets gaining a 19-10 quarter, the game was tied at 38-38.

The Knights were 22-26 from the foul line in the fourth to secure a semi berth vs. York HS. Hempfield at one point had a 10 point lead late in the game but continued to makes it fouls shots to keep the Comets at bay.

This and that.....ok....writing and sitting on the bench is a tough thing to do....I could not write up the PM/Hempfield game as well as I normally do because I could not do what I normally do for writing up a game—keep runs, rebound, blocks etc....plus my Hempfield friends would suggest that I was PM biased....What can one say to that? ....Bottom line is that Hempfield beat PM three times this year, and they did it today on a neutral court with Mid Penn refs....I thought the Keith Sweigart Blog would be a good look for all the fans about the PM/Hempfield game and the Warwick/Wilson game.

Thanks to Gary and Jerry Shenk for providing scoring details of today's games..

Mid Penn refs for all three games today.

LL....the LL has one AAAA boys team in States—Hempfield..The LL could get 2 more and are guaranteed of one more.. Both Warwick and PM have playback games this coming week.  PM has Red Land, and Warwick will play DBoone. They both play 2 games and need to win one.

Giant Center trivia....how many steps is it from the first floor to the court?

Reading and Wilson looked very good to me....
