Lebanon Catholic 55 Juniata Valley 43

March 24,2107

PIAA girls 1A finals @ Hershey Giant Center

It appeared as Leb. Cath. had the yips in the first quarter. The Beavers turned the ball over in their first 4 possessions.  Juniata Valley would capitalize by taking a 6-0 lead at around the 6 minute mark. A run was needed- check!

Leb Cath went on a 11-0 run paced by Alexis Hill, 5'10" jn. Hill scored on 3 drives and a foul shot during the run. Jasmine Turner ended LC's run as she netted a layup at the 1:17 mark.

LC led 13-7 after the first quarter. Key stat for the quarter was 11 boards for LC to 3 for Juniata.

Not sure if the second quarter was great defense or lack of offense. The LC Beavers held Juniata to one 3 pointer by Hayden Taylor, 5'6" fr point with 34 ticks left till half. The Beavers only put up 7 pt.: a layup by Hill, a spin and one from Celine Mars, 5'7" jn., and a jumper from Jayden Shellenhamer, 5'4" jn. 20-10 at the half.

Stat of the half: JV 3/29 shooting.

JV cut the lead quickly to 20-15 early in the 3rd. The Hornets put some man to man heat and caused some turnovers early. Jake Winningham hit the boards scoring 4 in a row.  25-21 LC at the 3:35 mark. LC would right itself scoring the last 6 points in the stanza capped off by a lay-up from Neesha Piere, 5'9" jn. 31-21 LC after 3.

Key Stat: Rebounds: JV 11 LC 7

4th quarter provided some drama.  With Lebanon Cath. seemingly in command, the Juniata Beavers cut the lead to 6 at 37-31 with 3:55 to go off a lay-up by Halee Smith. At the 1:15 mark, Celine Mars scored on a layup after the Beavers broke the press to give LC some breathing room at 44-37 with 1:20 to go. Time to make some fouls and collect a trophy!

There is no other way to describe the 4th quarter besides a LOT of fouls. The Beavers went to the line 24 times and made 14 (enough to protect the lead), and the Hornets were an outstanding 9/10. Final 55-43.

Points:

Leb. Cath.

Alexis Hill – 20, Celine Mars 14

Juniata Valley

Maddie Mattas 11

Sidelines: The Giant Center is an interesting place to watch a game. Fans from both sides are usually far away from each other. The Leb. Cath fans cleared space tfor the seniors (isn't it like that everywhere?)...media timeouts every quarter keep runs to a minimum....stats provided are great, although LLhoops used most of its own. ..LLhoops first in covering the 1A girls' final- hope we did ok.
