PENNSYLVANIA STATE RATINGS

 

March 4, 2007

 

1. Pittsburgh Schenley (25-2) (Pittsburgh City-District 8 AAAA)

 

The Spartans playing like they may have been looking ahead to the state tournament won the City Championship with a 56-49 win over Pittsburgh Oliver. It was the first time a City League team had got this close to Schenley. Deandre Kane led with 20pts, D. J. Kennedy scored 13pts and DeJuan Blair had 9pts, 11rebs and 7 blocks.

 

 

2. Aliquippa (26-2) (District 7 AA)

 

In the WPIAL AA semifinals the Quips blasted Northgate 100-67, as six players scored in double-figures led by Herb Pope with 20pts, Jonathan Baldwin and Brandon Lindsey with 16pts apiece, Antonio Reddic with 13pts, Tyler Jeter with 11pts and Charles Alford with 10pts. In the championship game, Aliquippa had their toughest game of the year with a AA team as they pulled out a 73-69 win over Jeannette. Pope led again with 24pts and Baldwin had 19pts.

 

3. Philadelphia Roman Catholic (25-3) (Philadelphia Catholic League)

 

In the Catholic League semifinals, Roman blasted North Division winner, Cardinal Dougherty 62-44. Bradley Wanamaker led with 22pts and Maalik Wayns had 17pts. Then took the championship with a 59-56 win over Philadelphia St. John Neumann-St. Maria Goretti. It was their second win over the Saints this year.

 

 

4. Philadelphia St. John Neumann-St. Maria Goretti (24-4) (Philadelphia Cath. League)

 

In the Catholic League tournament semifinals, the Saints belted Philadelphia North Catholic 73-45. Rick Jackson led with 26pts, 17rebs, 8blks and 3 assists. Antonio ÒScoopÓ Jardine scored 17pts. Lost in the championship game to Philadelphia Roman Catholic 59-56.

 

to lead, Jamal Wilson had 15pts and freshman Tony Chennault added 11pts.

 

 

5. Philadelphia Prep Charter (22-4) (Philadelphia Public League-District 12 AA)

 

Defeated District 12 AAA champion, Franklin Learning Center 49-40 to advance to the Philadelphia Public championship game. Markieff Morris had 15pts and 8rebs, Marcus Morris had 10pts, 11rebs, Then won their first Public League championship with a 49-48 victory over Philadelphia Simon Gratz. The Huskies fell behind 7-0 to start the game and trailed most of the first half, before taking the lead late in the half. The kept a slight lead most of the second half then held off a Bulldog rally to gain the title. Markieff was a tower of strength the whole game and he led with 23pts, 21rebs and 5blks. Marcus had 10pts and Jessie Morgan added 9pts.

 

 

6. Harrisburg (25-2) (District 3 AAAA)

 

The Cougars held off Carlisle 56-48 in the District 3 AAAA semifinals. With 3 minutes left in the game, Carlisle was still within 2-points of the Cougars, but a three-point play by Quincy Roberts pushed the lead to five and Harrisburg went on to hit on 7-of-8 free throws for the win. Laron Williams and Alphonso Dawson (8rebs) led the way with 15pts apiece. Ricardo Brown added 10pts and 8rebs. Then Harrisburg routed Penn Manor 73-34 to win their 10th District 3 AAAA championship. It was the third time in four years the AAAA final was a blowout. Harrisburg blasted Red Lion 49-28 last year and in 2004, Reading belted Red Lion 54-24. The Cougars lead was only 31-21 at the half, but they began the third quarter on an 8-0 run and kept running and dunking (7 for the game) until the final buzzer. Williams and Dawson both scored 18pts to lead and Quincy Roberts added 10pts. Dawson also set a new Harrisburg scoring record as he broke Dan BuieÕs mark of 1,396 points set in 1991. He now has 1,397.

 

7. Chester (24-5) (District 1 AAAA )

 

In the District 1 AAAA semifinals the Clippers raced to a 48-25 halftime lead on the way to an 85-57 win over Souderton. Nasir Robinson led with 22pts, Russell Johnson and Micah Covert both scored 12pts as 12-players scored. Chester then won their 6th consecutive District 1 AAAA championship with a 70-62 win over Plymouth-Whitemarsh. They trailed by 6-points at the half, but went on a 19-5 third quarter tear to take command. They extended the lead out to 17 points in the final quarter, before having to hold off a P-W to take the win Johnson led with 20pts, Nasir Robinson had 18pts, Covert had 13pts and Karon Burton added 11pts.

 

8. Plymouth-Whitemarsh (26-3) (District 1 AAAA)

 

The Colonels defeated Lower Merion 61-53 in a District 1 AAAA semifinal. Anthony Minor scored 17pts to lead, Marquise Boggs scored 15pts and Mike Acquaviva had 10pts Then in the championship game loss to Chester, Lance Wilson was high with 16pts, Minor scored 13pts and Acquaviva had 11pts.

 

9. Pennsbury (25-4) (District 1 AAAA)

 

In the District 1 AAAA consolation semifinals the Falcons defeated Upper Darby 70-64 in overtime. Dalton Pepper led with 18pts, Lavoy Allen had 15pts and Brandyn Corker added 12pts. The Falcons then captured 5th place with a 69-63 victory over West Chester Henderson. Pepper led with 18pts, Derrick Wright had 14pts, Kevin Gallagher had 13pts and Brad Fisher scored 11pts.

 

10. Philadelphia St. Joseph's Prep (21-6) (Philadelphia Catholic League)

 

Idle until the Alhambra Catholic Inviatational Tournament in two weeks.
